ur volunteers support our clients and staff in a different capacity. They mentor newcomers, practice English with them, interpret multiple languages, introduce them to their new community and available resources, and support networking events. We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our volunteers for their unwavering commitment to supporting our clients who are building their futures in British Columbia.
Below, two of our volunteers share how volunteering with ISSofBC built their confidence and connected them with other programs, empowering them to build their own lives in BC.
I arrived in Canada in 2022, and during my first two years as a newcomer I felt lost and unsure of how to fit into a new country. In 2024, I began looking for resources to support my job search and help me feel more connected to the community, and that’s when I found ISSofBC.
My journey started as a Career Paths client, where I participated in job-search strategies and resume workshops. Inspired by the support I received, I applied to become a volunteer. Over the past nine months, I’ve contributed to many areas, including admin tasks, event organization, childminding, and facilitating an English Conversation Circle group.
This volunteer experience has been life changing. It has helped me improve my English, feel more confident speaking, and participate comfortably in group settings. It also encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone. Along the way, I’ve had the chance to meet wonderful people and build friendships. I love being a volunteer at ISSofBC, and I’m truly grateful for my time here.”

When I first joined the English Conversation Circle, I struggled to speak English and had not yet made friends. However, as time passed, I began volunteering as a Volunteer Connection assistant, helping others and becoming more involved in the community. Step by step, with encouragement from the community engagement coordinator and my friends, I built confidence and improved my English skills.
Through dedication and support, I quickly became an English facilitator in the English Conversation Circle, guiding others on their language journey just as I had once been guided. Today, I can speak in public, express my thoughts clearly, and engage with others without hesitation. Because of this experience, I have built meaningful friendships and feel truly connected to my new community.
I am more confident than ever and ready to take the next steps in my journey here in Canada.”
