ehind every program, service, and milestone at ISSofBC are the people whose lives have been shaped through connection, opportunity, and belonging. In a year marked by uncertainty and change across the immigration and settlement sector, ISSofBC remained anchored in its purpose —providing trusted, effective, and compassionate support to newcomers as they build their lives in Canada.
Throughout 2025–26, the organization continued to adapt and evolve through strategic redesigns and program transitions that kept client needs at the centre of decision-making. At the same time, ISSofBC continued to champion a renewed vision for immigration—one that recognizes the immense social, cultural, and economic contributions newcomers make to communities across BC and Canada.
The following stories reflect the resilience, determination, and successes of the individuals, families, staff, volunteers, and partners who make this work possible. Together, they demonstrate the lasting impact of welcoming and supporting newcomers with dignity, inclusion, and care.
When a young refugee from Myanmar arrived in Canada less than a year ago, the future felt uncertain.
A new country, a new language, and an unfamiliar education system made it difficult to imagine what came next. Like many newcomer youth, they had ambitions but little understanding of how to turn them into reality.
Everything began to change when they started participating in youth programs at ISSofBC. Through career exploration activities, leadership opportunities, and connections with other young people, they began to gain confidence and discover new possibilities.
One passion quickly stood out: architecture.
Today, they are actively pursuing their goal of becoming an architect and are exploring education and work opportunities that will help them get there.
“The support I received helped me understand my options and gave me the confidence to plan my future. I now feel ready to pursue my career in architecture and take the next steps with clarity and purpose.”
When Fatuma arrived in Canada from Somalia as a single mother with two young children, she was searching for something many families take for granted: safety, stability, and the chance to start again.
She faced enormous challenges. She spoke little English, knew few people, and was trying to navigate unfamiliar systems while caring for her children. Most difficult of all, three of her children remained overseas.
Despite these obstacles, Fatuma never lost sight of her goal: building a secure future for her family.
Step by step, she began learning English, settling into her community, and gaining the confidence to navigate life in Canada independently. Along the way, she worked tirelessly to create stability for her children and prepare for the day her family could be together again.
That day eventually came. Through Canada’s One-Year Window family reunification program, Fatuma was reunited with her three remaining children—a life-changing milestone after years of separation.
Today, she is raising all five of her children in Canada, continuing her language studies, and exploring employment opportunities as she builds the next chapter of her life.

Her story is one of resilience, determination, and a mother’s unwavering commitment to creating a brighter future for her family.
After spending several years abroad caring for family members, a newcomer from China returned to Canada ready to reconnect with her community and continue building her life.
The transition was not easy. Years away had interrupted her settlement journey, and she found herself struggling with confidence and communication barriers.
Rather than withdrawing, she chose to get involved. She joined conversation circles, participated in community activities, and began volunteering. With each new experience, her confidence grew. She developed stronger communication skills, expanded her network, and became an active contributor in her community.
One opportunity proved especially meaningful. After volunteering as a tax filer during a community tax clinic, she returned the following year—not as a volunteer participant, but as the lead tax filer, guiding others.
Her journey reflects the power of community participation and lifelong learning. What began as a desire to rebuild confidence evolved into a leadership role that allowed her to give back and support others facing similar challenges. Today, she continues to play an active role in her community, demonstrating that meaningful integration and personal growth can happen at any stage of life.
Leaving home was hard for the Qiam family. Everything was new in Canada—English, life, and even friends.
Before English language LINC classes, daily tasks and talking with others made the family nervous. After starting free English classes at ISSofBC, things became better. Soraya now shares in classroom activities. Kiam handles errands and visits doctors easily. Ketira and Ferdows speak and write with confidence. Tamana overcame her fear of fast English.
