I arrived in Canada from Mexico one year ago with my husband, and at first, I found it very difficult to adjust. I missed the sense of belonging that came from being surrounded by my large, close-knit family, and I also faced language barriers that made it harder to connect with others. I first connected with ISSofBC through the Community Connections program to practice English and become more involved in Canadian culture. Over time, I participated in settlement and employment workshops, women’s programs, conversation circles, community events, and eventually volunteering opportunities.

Step by step, I gained confidence, reduced my sense of isolation, and discovered that meaningful relationships could be built even in a new language. I found employment, learned more about Canadian systems and Indigenous culture, and gained the courage to speak with people from diverse backgrounds, even in public settings. I hope to continue volunteering and growing so I can give back to the community that supported me. As I often tell others, ‘Do it even though you are feeling you don’t want to. Just do it.’ Be patient, keep moving forward, and the results will come.”
